Medical evacuation and repatriation
Medical evacuation and repatriation
Depending on the patient’s condition, location and place of destination, GVA can employ various means for the patient’s transportation including ground transportation, transportation by regularly scheduled flight, air ambulance, or a helicopter in the cases if the offshore medical evactuation procedure is needed. GVA will provide medical recommendations regarding transportation options and will develop the optimal medical repatriation or evacuation plan based on local transportation capabilities and budget restrictions, if any.
Evacuation and Repatriation by Air Ambulance
For those who have serious illness or injury and cannot be airlifted by a regular scheduled flight there is always the option to be transported by a dedicated air ambulance jet. The final destination depends on the wishes of the patient, his employer or the insurance company. In liaison with a number of international air ambulance providers, GVA arranges medical transportation and repatriation services worldwide. GVA is currently using Lear Jet-35, -45, -55 и -60, Challenger 600, Cessna Citation 550 Bravo, Dornier 328 Turboprop, Gulfstream G100 and other dedicated air ambulance jets. GVA with its multilingual Alarm Centres specialists and ICU physicians provides coordination, medical escort and monitoring of the medical transportation process. GVA follows the protocols of medical emergency management recommended by the standards of the American Heart Association.
The aircraft and the medical team are equipped with state of the art equipment for loading the patient and monitoring their vital signs during the flight.
Safety and reliability of flights are provided by high-qualified pilots and technicians. The Air Ambulance operators are fully certified, licensed and insured in accordance with international standards.
As a significant transportation user, GVA has access to all empty legs worldwide and for this reason the cost of GVA Air Ambulance transportation service is reasonable and competitive.

Ground Transportation
Ground transportation is typically performed by regular ambulance (short or long-distance) or for patients in life-threatening conditions by resuscitation (ICU) ambulance which is normally equipped with cardio monitor, defibrillator, oxygen, ALV devices and other ICU equipment and staffed by resuscitation-trained medical team.
Emergency medical evacuation is used for bringing a patient to a hospital, or for transferring a patient from one hospital to another (specialized or upgraded), or for transportation of a patient to the airport for further medical evacuation by commercial flight or by air ambulance to another city or country. Upon arrival of a patient to the airport of destination, GVA also arranges a ground ambulance from the airfield to the hospital.
Regular Flight Transportation
In many cases when the medical condition of a patient requires transportation to a medical facility which is not available locally, a decision is made for transportation of a patient to another city or a country for further hospitalization and/or rehabilitation. For a person travelling abroad the decision is made based on the terms of the policy, preferences of the employer, patient or family.
In those cases where the patient’s medical condition allows, and there is an air connection to the place of destination, the patient can be transported by a regularly scheduled flight with a doctor, nurse or full medical team escort. For transporting patients in a laying position a dedicated part of a plane is separated in the front or in the back of the aircraft. When stretchers are used, such stretchers are placed on the special platform in the separated part of the cabin.
For patients whose medical condition does not allow transportation by a regularly scheduled flight there is the option to use an air ambulance.
